Our history

  • In 1886 Peter Maersk Møller bought a steamship named ‘Laura’. The rest, as they say, is history. As society became more dependent on oil, the demand for tanker vessels grew – and with it, new business opportunities. This led to the birth of Maersk Tankers in 1928. At the time, the company had five vessels to its name. It has since grown to become a towering figure in the product tanker industry.   • 1928

    Maersk Tankers takes delivery of its first five tankers, the first of which is Emma Maersk.

  • 1940

    With 11 crude carriers in service, Maersk Tankers is the largest tanker operator in Scandinavia.

  • 1965

    The fleet consists of 31 tankers with a combined tonnage of 982,000 tdw. The first two product tankers join the fleet.

  • 1972

    The first gas tanker enters the Maersk Tankers fleet.

  • 1993

    The world’s first double-hull VLCC is delivered to Maersk Tankers.

  • 1999

    Maersk Tankers begins operating commercial pools.

  • 2014

    Divestment of the fleet of VLCCs, as Maersk Tankers focuses its business on product tankers. A new strategy is launched, increasing the company’s use of digitisation.

  • 2017

    A. P. Moller - Maersk separates parts of its business. Maersk Tankers is acquired by A.P. Moller Holding.

  • 2021

    Synergy Group takes over Maersk Tankers' technical management business and Maersk Tankers becomes a service company with commercial management at its core.

  • 2022

    Maersk Tankers goes to market with green tech business Njord - a green transition partner for enhanced fleet performance and emission reduction through technology

  • 2023

    Maersk Tankers sets out to offer seaborne transportation of clean ammonia and confirmed the order of up to ten very large ammonia carriers through an affiliated company. The first four vessels are due to be delivered from late 2026 onwards.

  • 2024

    Maersk Tankers acquires Penfield Marine to create a large-scale crude and product tanker company offering pool partners and cargo customers a wider range of services
